The main threats responsible for global species loss include increased poaching pressure and illegal wildlife trade (Atkins et al., 2018 Challender & MacMillan, 2014 Herbig & Minnaar, 2019) and habitat loss and fragmentation due to increasing human population pressure (Cheteni, 2014 Fahrig et al., 2019 Fletcher et al., 2018). Concern over the loss of large and charismatic mammalian species, for example, African elephant ( Loxodonta africana), and black ( Diceros bicornis) (Amin et al., 2006 Emslie, 2020b) and white ( Ceratotherium simum) (Emslie, 2020a Harper et al., 2013) rhinoceros in Africa, has been raised (Emslie et al., 2016 Grooten & Almond, 2018). This extinction crisis prompted participants at the Society for Conservation Biology Conference (Stoett, 2019) in Kuala Lumpur to declare it “The Crisis of Humanity.” Substantial efforts are being made to up‐scale global conservation efforts, and decision support frameworks are being put in place to reduce the loss of wildlife species in their native range states (Ceballos et al., 2017 Schwartz et al., 2018 Travers et al., 2019). Opportunities for rhinoceros conservation vary across the spatial scale, and these include (a) a well‐coordinated stakeholder and community involvement, (b) strategic meta‐population management, (c) enhancing law enforcement initiatives through incorporating real‐time surveillance technologies and intruder detection sensor networks for crime detection, (d) scaling up demand reduction awareness campaigns, and (e) developing more certified wildlife crime and forensic laboratories, and information repository for international corporation.Ī global unprecedented loss of wild species associated with high rates of extinction has been recently reported (Bongaarts, 2019 Brondizio et al., 2019 Johnson et al., 2017 Quesada, 2019). Rhinoceros conservation strategies being implemented include education and awareness campaigns, better equipped and more antipoaching efforts, use of innovative systems and technologies, dehorning, and enhancing safety nets, and livelihoods of local communities. Cascading effects emanating from these threats include small and isolated populations, which are prone to genetic, demographic, and environmental uncertainties. The common threats to rhinoceros conservation identified in this paper include poaching, habitat fragmentation and loss, international trade in illegal rhino products, and external shocks such as global financial recessions and pandemics. A total of 193 articles, which were most relevant to key themes on rhinoceros conservation, were used in this study. A literature search from 1975 to 2020 was carried out using a predefined search protocol, involving a number of filters based on a set of keywords to balance search sensitivity with specificity. In this study, we analyzed (i) threats to rhinoceros conservation including external shocks, (ii) historical rhinoceros conservation strategies in Zimbabwe and Africa, more broadly, and (iii) opportunities for enhanced rhinoceros conservation in Zimbabwe and Africa. The complexity and magnitude of threats to black ( Diceros bicornis) and white ( Ceratotherium simum) rhinoceros conservation in Africa have triggered global concerns and actions. DoorDash is also candid about the impact of the coronavirus, saying it expects its growth rate to slow in the coming quarters as the pandemic ends.īefore the pandemic, 63% of U.S. In a government filing, DoorDash said it expects to continue to spend heavily as it tries to expand internationally and add non-food businesses to its platform. The company did turn a profit of $23 million in the second quarter this year, but followed that with a $43 million loss in the third quarter. Last year, it spent $410 million to acquire Caviar, an upscale rival.ĭoorDash had a net loss of $667 million in 2019 and lost $149 million in the first nine months of 2020. DoorDash has lost money in every year since its founding, citing the cost of developing its platform and expanding into new markets. The company's growth hasn't come without headaches. "DoorDash is a platform that's enabling the small, local merchant to play in this space, bringing the product in minutes, not days." DoorDash says those caps force it to charge consumers more."Ultimately, a lot of these trends will stay," he said. Several cities, including New York and Chicago, and the states of New Jersey and Washington have temporarily capped fees that delivery companies can charge restaurants. DoorDash says it reduced commissions for the smallest restaurants during the pandemic, but the fees will likely remain an issue. Some independent restaurants have been vocal critics of the company, saying its commissions - which can approach 30% - are too high. White says DoorDash also has the most variety in its listings, giving it less exposure to any one restaurant chain. But suburban families put in larger orders and drivers encountered more predictable traffic and parking so they could deliver more efficiently, Shmulik said.ĭavidson analyst Tom White, who has a “buy” rating on DoorDash’s stock, said the company’s strong market share gains and future possibilities, including grocery and retail delivery, outweigh the risk of slower growth once the pandemic subsides. Skeptics thought the economics of food delivery would fall apart in less dense areas, because there was lower demand. AP's earlier story follows below.ĭoorDash is capping a year of explosive growth with an initial public offering of its stock, hoping to keep the momentum going even if demand for food delivery eases in a post-pandemic world.ĭoorDash pulled ahead by concentrating on suburbs and smaller cities while its rivals stayed mainly in big cities, said Mark Shmulik, an analyst with Bernstein. The company hopes to keep the momentum going even if demand for food delivery eases in a post-pandemic world. That’s led to explosive growth for companies like DoorDash. Virus-induced lockdown orders and the closure of indoor dining have made meal delivery services indispensable for many restaurants and diners this year. The opening price valued the company which is trading under the symbol DASH, at around $58 billion. The shares opened at $182 after the San Francisco-based company priced them at $102 each late Tuesday. DoorDash shares soared 78% as the meal delivery service made its debut Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. You can also mute notifications for a specific conversation for a set amount of time by tapping on a message thread, then the contact header, and then Mute. Tap your profile, then Notifications, then Show, where you can choose whether to display the name, content, and actions for an incoming text just the name or nothing at all. If you need more granular control, you can find that in the Signal app itself, where the steps are the same no matter what platform you’re on. From your home screen, head to Settings, then Apps & Notifications, where you can turn off all notifications. To turn off Signal lock screen notifications on iOS, go to your phone’s Settings > Notifications, then scroll down and tap Signal > Show Previews > Never. There’s not much point in having an app for sensitive messages if they just pop up on your display whenever you receive one. This means keeping people from seeing what you’re doing there from a lock screen or when switching apps. It’s important to make sure that what happens in Signal stays in Signal. (iOS still doesn’t let you change the default messaging app, sorry!) Just remember that not everyone you text has it installed and that an iOS user you’re texting with might check their Signal app less often than they do iMessage. On Android, you can make Signal your default messaging app by going to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Default Apps > SMS app, and picking Signal. iOS users will need to tap their profile icon and then Settings to access the full menu.) (Note: Android users can access Signal’s Settings menu either by tapping their profile icon or selecting the menu under the three dots in the upper-right corner, then tapping Settings. The app does periodically send truncated, hashed phone numbers back to Signal’s servers, which is how it checks if any of your contacts are also using it, but the company also says it discards that information “ immediately.” That way, the app can alert you when one of your contacts signs up for Signal if you’d rather not get those updates, tap Settings, then Notifications, and toggle off Contact Joined Signal. You should feel comfortable letting Signal access your device’s contacts it stores that information on your phone, not in the cloud. But Signal stands apart, both for its rich features and the fact that its code has been open source for years, meaning cryptographers have had plenty of opportunities to poke and prod it for flaws. Signal is not the only messaging app to offer end-to-end encryption iMessage has it, as do stand-alone apps like Telegram. All of those people can take advantage of end-to-end encryption, which means that no one-not the government, their phone company, or Signal itself-can read the contents of messages as they pass between devices. Apptopia now estimates Signal has more than 600 million active monthly users. It saw another surge in January 2021 after WhatsApp, which end-to-end encrypts personal chats using the Signal Protocol, botched the messaging around a privacy policy update. In May 2020, as police brutality protests swept US cities, daily Signal downloads nearly tripled from their average, according to analytics company Apptopia. Signal’s popularity often spikes in times of strife or when alternatives seem more precarious. And thanks in part to a $50 million infusion in 2018 from Brian Acton, the former WhatsApp CEO and current interim Signal Foundation CEO, the once niche app is more accessible than ever. Wade, Signal represents most people’s best way to communicate safely. Whether it’s to protect sensitive conversations amid social unrest or to keep your communications private after the fall of Roe v. In times of uncertainty, people rightly often turn to the encrypted messaging app Signal. One of them told me how much she enjoyed seeing and talking to my uncle everyday and that made me feel better about him being there. I had a couple of them approach me and ask how we were doing. Most of them seemed very friendly and concerned with the well being of the residents. One thing I did appreciate about the facility were the nurses. The atmosphere was somewhat depressing because of the lack of activity. I had to visit with my uncle in an open area that did not provide much privacy or quiet.I was not sure what to expect of an assisted living facility, but I assumed there would be more activities available for the residents to keep them occupied. The ones who were not as mobile did not seem very happy as they were parked in an area and then left there. It did appear as if there were a lot of residents just sitting around without having much interaction with the staff or other residents. I visited Fireside Lodge a few times to see my great uncle and I thought the place seemed just okay. I do think they need to work on establishing a livelier atmosphere for the sake of the residents. Overall I think it is a decent place with a kind staff. And I am sad to say I will not again use Mammoth Properties due to the misrepresentation and lack of customer service.Lirou I visited Fireside Lodge a few times to see my great uncle and I thought the place seemed just okay. I am certainly not a Four Seasons snob, but I have never seen a place this bad. I sent a friendly email to Mammoth Properties advising them to please look at the unit before renting it again so that they could save their reputation. The Jacuzzi and pool were also closed for refurbishment. So you are stuck in this filthy dump in silence – very depressing. The couches looked to be fraternity house circa 1977. The plumbing was bad, and one toilet was inoperable – clearly by the dampness and odor on the disgusting wall-to-wall carpet in the bathroom, the toilet overflowed with every flush. The carpet was filthy to the point that you didn’t dare remove your shoes. The bedding was torn and moldy, there was quite literally garbage and construction supplies everywhere (mid refurbishment I suppose). The furniture was filthy, smelly and strewn everywhere (really junk-yard ready). Fireside #302 on the other hand is truly uninhabitable. I am a Mammoth regular, and know that many condos are dated, but all have been fine for a quick ski weekend. We rented Fireside #302 on the advice of Liz at Mammoth Properties, sight unseen (they were still working on the photos! **WARNING!**).
